WHEN TO GET A FORD OIL CHANGE
Getting the oil changed is essential for any car, truck, or SUV. So, how often will you need to get the oil changed, anyway? That depends on what you drive. Every vehicle has its own specific maintenance schedule.
More specifically, it depends on what type of oil your vehicle takes. For example, many older models run on conventional oil. It’s derived from crude oil and typically needs to be changed every six months, or every 3,000 miles.
Most vehicles rolling off the assembly line today take synthetic oil, though. It’s designed to last longer and operate under more extreme temperatures. If your Ford takes synthetic, you’ll only need to get your oil changed once a year, or every 10,000 miles.
WHY ARE OIL CHANGES IMPORTANT?
Getting your oil changed is one of the best ways to take care of your engine. That’s because oil takes care of some very important jobs under the hood. First, it lubricates all the machinery, so it can run smoothly.
All those parts can generate a lot of heat as you drive. That can cause friction to build up between the parts, and cause problems over time. To prevent that, oil cools your engine down, too. After a while, oil starts to wear down, though. It even changes its color and consistency. There’s even a good chance that a fair amount of dirt or build-up has accumulated in your oil over time, tampering with its ability to do its job properly.
When your oil gets to this point, it can no longer cool or effectively lubricate the machinery under the hood. This can lead to significant damage—not only to your engine and its parts, but also the overall, long-term health of your vehicle. That’s when it’s time to get your oil changed.
OIL CHANGE WARNING SIGNS
If you can’t remember how long it’s been since your last oil change, don’t worry! Your vehicle has a few built-in reminders. It can also provide you with a few warning signs. Some of the things that you should look and listen for include:
- Oil Pressure Warning Light – If you’re overdue for an oil change, you’ll eventually see a dashboard warning light that looks like an old-fashioned oil can.
- Blue/Gray Smoke – When you’re severely low on oil, the little bit you have left could begin to burn up. This results in gray or blue smoke coming out of the tailpipe.
- Knocking Noise – Since your engine has a harder time operating on low oil, you may hear noises while you drive, including a knocking sound.
- Dark Oil – When oil is in good shape, it’s typically free-flowing and golden brown. Once it gets old, it looks more like a thick, black sludge. To see how your oil is doing, just pop the hood, find the dipstick, pull it out, and wipe it off on a rag or paper towel. Then, reinsert it, pull it out once more, and you’ll be able to determine the status of your oil.
To keep a more manual eye on the health of your oil, you can also consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual. This will provide you a range of miles that your vehicle is designed to drive in between oil changes. If you realize you’ve hit that mark, or even just think you’re close, you should bring your car in for service.
